How to Tip Your House Cleaner (Charlotte Guide)

Whether to tip, how much, when, and how. Practical tipping guidance for Charlotte cleaning customers, recurring or one time.

Tipping your cleaner is not required and not expected. It is appreciated and, on a great clean, normal. Here is the practical Charlotte guide.

Should I tip

Tip if:

  • The work was excellent (better than expected, more thorough than required)
  • The cleaner went out of their way (quiet during your work call, accommodated a last minute scope change, handled a surprise like a sick pet)
  • It is a holiday or year end and you have had a great recurring relationship
  • It is a special occasion clean (pre wedding, post hosting, big life event)

Skip the tip if:

  • The clean was below the standard you booked
  • You communicated dissatisfaction at completion (handle through the satisfaction guarantee, not a reduced tip)
  • The pricing was already above market (tipping should reward, not subsidize)

There is no obligation either way.

How much

One time clean (regular, deep, move). $20 to $40 cash for a smaller home, $40 to $80 for a larger home, more for a deep clean that exceeded expectations. Or 10 to 15 percent of the service price.

Recurring clean. Most clients do not tip every visit. Tipping every 2 to 4 visits, $20 to $40 each, is a generous and sustainable pattern. Or on a great clean, in the moment.

Holiday tip (recurring clients). A standard pattern in Charlotte: equal to one full visit, given in mid December. Many recurring clients consider this the social contract.

Airbnb and STR turnover. Hosts typically build the cleaner’s pay into the cleaning fee and do not tip per turnover. End of season, end of year, or after a heavy event weekend, a $50 to $100 thank you is common.

Move out cleans. $30 to $80 if the photo report saved your deposit. Worth it.

When and how

During the visit. Cash on the kitchen counter with a thank you note is the classic. Hand the cleaner a thank you in person if you are home and the timing is right.

Through the booking platform. MaidCalm does not currently process tips through the booking platform. Tips go directly to the cleaner.

Venmo or Cash App. Common pattern with younger clients. Ask the cleaner if they prefer this. Many do.

Group tip on holiday. Cash, sealed in an envelope, with a short note (“Thank you for everything this year, happy holidays”).

Tip 100 percent of the cleaner

The MaidCalm tipping policy is simple: every dollar tipped goes to the cleaner. We do not pool, do not split, do not share with the company. If you tip, the cleaner receives the full amount.

Things that are better than money

A few small things cleaners consistently mention as appreciated:

  • A specific compliment. “I cannot believe you got the inside of the dishwasher seal that clean” beats a generic “great job.”
  • A Google review with their first name. Reviews drive new business; a first name reference helps the cleaner specifically.
  • Coffee or a drink. Cleaning is physical work and a cold drink in 95 degree Charlotte summer is a small kindness.
  • Pet friendliness. Letting the cleaner say hi to a friendly dog is a small but real warmth.
  • Calm communication. A clear note is better than texting during the clean.

Tipping a cleaner crew

Larger homes sometimes have two cleaners on a single visit. Tip the team total (not each cleaner). $40 to $80 cash for a typical two cleaner deep clean is a good starting point.

Tipping etiquette across visits

You do not need to top last visit’s tip. Tipping is per visit, not cumulative.

You do not need to apologize for not tipping every time. Tipping cadence varies and most cleaners do not track.

You can adjust as the relationship develops. A new cleaner gets the standard, a long term cleaner who knows your home gets the holiday tip pattern.

A question we get often

“Is it weird to give a thank you note without a tip?”

Not at all. A specific thank you note (handwritten, mentioning something specific the cleaner did) is genuinely appreciated and often more memorable than cash. Combine it with a Google review and you have made the cleaner’s week.
