Move In vs Move Out Cleaning: Which Do You Need?
The difference between move in and move out cleaning, when to schedule each, and what each one includes for Charlotte renters and homeowners.
Both are turnover cleans on an empty home. The difference is whose deposit, whose calendar, and what evidence you need at the end.
Move out cleaning
You are leaving. The home is empty (or nearly empty). The job is to leave the property in turnover ready condition for the next occupant or for the landlord’s inspection.
Goal. Maximize your security deposit return. Hit every item on the landlord’s typical inspection list.
Scope. Full deep clean of every room, plus inside cabinets, inside oven, inside refrigerator, inside dishwasher, all appliance interiors, baseboards, blinds, light fixtures, window sills and tracks, inside windows on the first floor.
Photo report. Yes. The photos are evidence of the condition you left behind in case the landlord disputes any item.
Timing. Day of move out, after the truck loads, or the day after if you have flexibility. Sometimes the day before move out if the home is already empty.
Typical Charlotte cost. $329 to $525 for a 2 to 3 bedroom rental. Larger homes scale up.

Move in cleaning
You are moving in. The home is empty (or about to be) and the previous occupant either did not clean or did a surface clean. The job is to make a fresh space feel yours.
Goal. Walk into your new home and not see, smell, or feel the previous occupant. Inside the cabinets, inside the appliances, behind the toilet, into the corners.
Scope. Same as move out, with two emphasis differences:
- Inside everything is mandatory. Inside cabinets, inside drawers, inside oven, inside fridge, inside dishwasher. You are about to put your own things in those spaces. Skipping the interior is not an option.
- Sanitization focus. Toilets, tubs, sinks, doorknobs, switch plates, and surfaces get a sanitizing pass. You are about to live there; you want a clean reset.
Photo report. Optional but useful. Some clients ask for it as their personal “before I moved in” record.
Timing. After previous occupant has fully vacated, before your truck arrives. Sometimes the same day with a tight schedule, more often a day or two before.
Typical Charlotte cost. $329 to $525 for a 2 to 3 bedroom home. Same range as move out because the scope is essentially the same.
Why people sometimes book both
You are renting. Your old place needs a move out clean. Your new place needs a move in clean. Two different cleans on two different homes within a few days of each other.
We can schedule both with one booking. The price is calculated separately for each home; there is no bundle discount, but there is no bundle penalty either. You see both prices instantly.
Why builders and property managers book move in cleans
A new construction or a fully renovated unit needs a “construction clean” before the first occupant. Drywall dust, sawdust, paint splatter, sticker residue on appliances, fingerprints on every fixture. This is its own subspecialty within move in cleaning. Tell us at booking if your home is post construction; we plan for it.
What to look for at the walkthrough after either clean
If you are doing a move out clean, verify the photo report against the rental’s inspection checklist. Specifically:
- Inside oven and fridge actually clean (open them)
- Baseboards wiped (run a finger along one)
- Window blinds dusted slat by slat (check three)
- Inside cabinets clean (open the bottom corner cabinet, the most likely to be skipped)
- Toilet base (look behind it)
- Tub or shower grout (look at the corners)
If you are doing a move in clean, walk through and stop at:
- Inside the silverware drawer (a classic miss)
- Top of the refrigerator
- Inside the dishwasher (run a clean cycle if there is any doubt)
- Inside the medicine cabinet
- Inside the pantry corners
What you should not expect from either
A move clean is not:
- Carpet shampoo or steam clean (separate service, separate company usually)
- Wall painting (a separate trade)
- Pest control (a separate trade)
- Outdoor pressure washing
- Window exterior on second floor windows
If you need any of those, hire them separately. We can recommend Charlotte vendors we work alongside on coordinated projects.
